  • Students pursuing the international certificate in family therapy are typically applicants holding (minimally) a master’s degree from a regionally or nationally recognized university (usually a Chinese university) in the areas of social work, counseling, therapy, psychology, psychiatry, or similarly related field. Applicants to this certificate program should already hold a basic certificate to conduct counseling or therapy in China. If they do not already hold a certificate to conduct counseling or therapy in China they should be able to earn the locally issued Chinese certificate before beginning the clinical practice part of SAFTI certificate program. Students will submit proof of their current Chinese counseling certificate at the start of the program or before beginning the clinical practice part of the SAFTI certificate program.

  • The Institute was founded by Dr. John K. Miller in 2005 during the time that he served as Program Director of University of Oregon’s nationally accredited Graduate Couples and Family Therapy Program (accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) in 2000 under the leadership of Dr. Miller). In 2006 Dr. Miller led a special delegation of prominent western therapists to meet with some of the leading Chinese family therapy scholars from across China, establishing relationships and fostering future collaborations.

  • In 2009 Dr. Miller was awarded a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar award that included funding from the US Department of State to conduct a year-long family therapy training and direct clinical service project in Beijing, and throughout China. Dr. Miller has been teaching and conducting research in China each year since 2005 and serves as adjunct or visiting faculty of some of the top Chinese universities in the field. The institute has hosted numerous students, scholars, and professors from China and Southeast Asia on academic and clinical collaboration projects to the US. Most of the faculty members at the Institute have collaborated and worked together for over a decade.

  • China’s current practice of counseling and therapy has developed rapidly since 2005 as a product of collaborative scholarly and academic relationships with international scholars and therapists. Family therapy clinics in China were opened as early as 1994 in Kunming by early Chinese pioneers of family therapy (Chang, Tong, Shi, & Zeng, 2005). The Chinese government has sponsored educational and psychoeducational campaigns beginning in 1998 to help overcome the common barriers to therapy services such as cost, access and stigma (Kou, 1998; Miller 2010). In 2002 the Ministry of Education called on all elementary and high schools in China to establish “psychological counseling rooms” in response to the increasing rates of psychological problems reported among Chinese youth and students (Chang et al., 2005). Recent studies indicate that about 17.5% (about 238 million) of the Chinese population suffer from some form of diagnosable disorder , yet few receive any counseling or therapy support due to stigma, a lack of qualified providers, financial concerns and a fragmented clinical service delivery system (often because the people don’t know who is qualified to provide services). Ever increasing economic development and the subsequent precipitating social changes have fueled an increase in work stress, tensions in the home, addictions, substance abuse, and diminished communal supports (Guo, 1987; Phillips, Liu, & Zhang, 1999).

In the limited situations where they have been made available, the most popular modalities for therapy in China are family based, community oriented, short-term, problem-focused, solution oriented, and directive approaches. Professional associations have advocated for increasing the integration of clinical services throughout China (Li, Duan, Ding, Yue, & Beitman, 1994). The demand for therapy services is on the rise, as is evidenced by the increased utilization of outpatient and hospital-based therapy services and the tremendous popularity of radio call-in shows, online services, and counseling hotlines (Chang et al., 2005; Min, 2001). However, there are few training programs that offer post-degree training in professional, competency based, couples and family therapy counseling.

  • The Institute embraces training methodology that focuses on student competency evaluations and direct feedback (see Miller, Todahl, and Platt, 2010 and Miller, 2011 for descriptions of this competency based orientation). Students who successfully complete the program must demonstrate competency in clinical and professional practice to earn certification. The Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy Program at the Sino-American Family Therapy Institute is an accredited training program approved by the International Accreditation Commission for Systemic Therapy Education.
